Top Corners Of The 2023 NFL Draft.

I Wanted To Find The Right Angle To Deliver My Top Five Corners List, But They Were All Covered.

Christian Gonzales— Oregon.

Christian Gonzales Picked The Right Time To Pique With Corner Coverage Ability, Size, And Athletic Profile. "He has a receiver-type body." One Scout Told The Athletic.

Even With The Outstanding Physical Profiles, Athletic Testing, And Heralding Praised Of Most of The Cornerbacks In This Class—The Parity Makes The Choosing The Wrong Corner A Tough Task. On Film, Gonzales Uses An Almost Unfair Combination Of Smooth Athletic Ability With Length At 6'1 With With 32" Arm Length Gonzales Has A Natural Feel For Throwing Hands On Receivers He's Bracketing On Outside. His length Also Allows Him To Stay Patience In His Stance. As Receivers Rise To Get Into Motion In Most Cases, Gonzales Stays Down "Trusting," "Stalking" The Movement Of His Opposition Even If He's Beat By The First Move, He Uses Limber Arms And Time To Disrupt The Passing Lane. He's Comparable To LeBron James In Basketball In That Sense, Watching A Guard Slip By To Catch The Block From Behind. When Ge Spring Boards Out Of His, The Reaction Rival Those Of Chemical Reacts. When Gonzales Gets Out Seat To Mirror His Opponent, He's Even More Incredible In Fluid Stride, Changing Direction And Pedal Gate Distance. If He's Back Pedaling stalking An In-breaking Route and Need To Explode Out Of A Sudden Stop. He Can flip his Hips And Move In stride from Back Pedal To Full Stride in Complete Control Of His 4.38 Speed. If Any "Negatives" Behind Christian Gonzales's Game Exist, They Start With His Tackling. The Same Qualities That Serve Gonzales Well In Pass Defense Play Against Him As A Tackler. As A Long Corner, he Relies upon His Reaction And Length. He Throws His Body Out Towards The Legs of Runner Rely More On Shoe String Tackles. I Don't Fault Most Corners For Not Approaching Tackling And Gap Plugging With The Same Ferocity As Say Breaking On Routes. The Impact That Some Of Rushers And Rushing Types Deliver Are Far Too "Longevity" Compromising For The Light Bodies Of Corners. I Can't Tell You The Last I Watched Or Stephon Gilmore Take A Direct Wrap Tackle. In That Same Vein, Gonzales Can, At Times, Get Ultra Physical In Coverage. He's Excellent With His Hand Stab At The Point of Attack. Still, He Could Get into Trouble with How Long He Wants To Carry Receivers Into The With Consistently, Into Like A Neji From Naruto Special Move "Eight Trigrams: Hazan Strike." In A Tough Tight Coverage Cornerback Class, Gonzales Has A Sliver Of A Razor Thin Edge On The Rest Of The Coverage Specialist Uber Talented Class.

Devon Witherspoon—Illinois

Devon Witherspoon began His Astronomical Rise Up The Draft Board As Something Of A Black Hole. He Finished High School As A No Star In Orbit. Even After Three Season At Illinois, He Entered This Season As A "relative unknown." Going Back To High School As A Zero Star Recruit Out Of Pensacola, Florida, Witherspoon Displayed The Trait of a Dynamic Athlete. Still, Didnt Receive The Pull Towards Football Until Late In His High School Career. Witherspoon Brings The Extreme Physical Profile Like Many Of His Other Draft Counterparts. He's An Outlier In That Sense. At 5'11 And A Feather Light, 180 Lbs Might Have The Most Coverage Versatility From Slot(Where I Wouldn't Trust Gonzales) To Following Receivers To The Outside.

He Excelled Athletically, Even As A Zero Star Recruit(Something You Don't Hear Often). He Played Basketball And, Eventually, Football. Never Accruing Any National Attention But Earn A Few FBS Offers Eventually Ending Up In The Big 10 And Illinois. Lacking Length Strengthened Witherspoon Coverage Skills. He utilizes His Recognition And Sudden Awareness To Diagnose And React Suddenly To Even Light Movement, Like His Bodies Bracketed With Motion Detectors.

In Zone Coverage, Witherspoon Showed Preparedness In Reading The Quarterbacks And Understanding Which Route Combination To Jump. He Finished The Season Averaging 34.9% Completions Percentage On 738 Coverage Snaps And Three Interceptions. He Played Mostly Out Wide On the Outside and Garnered The Name "Island Boy," But He Follows His Matchup All Around The Field.

He Didn't Test At The Combine But Tape Doesn't Deceive. He Has No Misfires In His. He Plays Ball In The Air Brilliantly and has Excellent Instincts For When To Reach His Hands Out And Break Up Passes While Draped On His Receiver. Some Plaudits Have Alleged That Witherspoon Can Reach Full Speed In Half A Step. Despite Limited Physicality, Girth, And Stature, Witherspoon Handled The Physicality Of Blocks and The Stronger Receivers Of The Big Ten On The Outside. If You're A Scout, You Love The Efficacy He Puts In With The "Run Fit" And On Blitzes.

Punches Through The Line With An Attractive Reckless Abandon, Like A Stunt In A Fast And Furious Movie. Coming Laying Heavy Hits Whenever Necessary, But He Borders On Reckless. He Could be Himself On Injured Reserve Often Or As One Of The Worst Misses On Juke Moves From Pro Level Talent. As Far As Negatives Go, Witherspoon Only Produced "One" Solid Year Of Elite Coverage. In The Past Three Seasons, He's Given Up Only 1008 Yards On 79 Receptions In Cover, But Only 206 Yards Coming Last, And 22 Last Season. Witherspoon Showed Some Signs Of Struggles To Cover Inside Beating Routes. This Detraction Showed Up Effort Time On Film. With A 3-Cone Drill To Base These Speculations On, I Couldn't Say Whether He's Slow Laterally But Gets Beat Inside Enough On Film. I don't think he will play too much press coverage in the NFL. He Surrendered One Catch(Reception) In Press Coverage.

A lot Of His Best Press Tape Boils Down To Poor Quarterbacking, Misplaced Balls, Lazy Routes, And So Forth.

Joey Porter Jr. —Penn State

Continuing The Trend Of Long Dangly Corners Penn States's Joey Porter Jr., I Watched His Dad Play Back In The Day For The Steelers and Dolphins— Man, I Feel Old. The Son He's Another Of The Dozen Boundary Exclusive Ready Made Corners. Porter Jr. has The Next Line Of These predators, Like Corners Who Have Developed In Response To The College and Pro Employing Larger, More Physical Outside "X" Receivers. These DB Types Get In Your Face And Porter Jr. He's Known As "The Best Corner At The Line Of Scrimmage." Porter Jr. likes To Work Like A Porter With Clay, Using His Hands To Redirect And Funnel Receivers Off Their routes. Bigger Lankier Receivers With Less Explosiveness And Twitchiness Will Have A Fight On Their Hands To Untangled Porters' Claws From Their Jerseys On Sunday. He Has Great Length And Great Closing Speed For Bearing Down And Closing, Breaking Up Shorter Slant routes, Hitch Routes, And Skinnier Post routes. Porter Can Get Hands Heavy, Jostling With Wide Receivers Deep Into Routes. He Assessed 13 Penalties In The Past Two Year Of Full-Time Play And Completed 17 Reps On The Bench. He's All The Strong Needed At Corner To Wrestle.

Porter Also Uses Acuity. He Has Great Route Recognition. As Receivers Exit Their Stance, Porter, Depending On The Route, Breaks Into Trail Or Holds His Position Until The Receiver Declare Or Gives a Tell About Their Route. As Far As Negatives, Porter Doesn't Possess Fluid Athleticism. He Tested "Ok-ish," And His 4.46 Soeed Ranked In 66th Hamper's Porter From Taking Home The Label Of A Complete Corner. Fast Enough To Corner Most Modern Receivers A "Snaggy" Guy Like Himself Will Need More Speed To Cover The Complete Gambit Of Outside Receivers. His Lack of Speed Shows When He Has To Stop And Break on a Comeback Route. He Gets Lost In The Dust Too Often. If He Can't Disrupt The Timing Of Most Route, The Turf Monster Grasp Him And Seizes Any GAin. In other places, Porter He's Super Leggy. Think Of Him Like A Guy On Stilts. His Leg Length Enables Him To Moves In Any One Direction Fast, But A Stout Torso Hurts Him To Change Direction. His Long Speed Doesn't Carry Very Long Or Speedy Keeping Porter Out Of The Deep Zone Coverage Responsibility Will Save Yourself A Lot Of Time On The Teach Tape Through The Week. Overall, Porter Has The Tools, I'm Not Advocating Violence, But He'll Put His Hands On Any Receiver He's Matched Up With On Sunday.

Kelee Ringo—Georgia

Just Like With The Romanov dynasty And The Communist Revolution In Russia One Rise Usually Precipitates The Fall Of Another Place Holder. Devon Witherspoons Rise Coincided With Georgia Cornerback Kelee Ringo's Fall. Seemingly TheTop Corner At The Start Of The Season, Ringo Earned The Admiration Of Scouts With His Athletic Ability And His Freakish Size. Ringo Stands With Un-Cloaking 6'2 207. He's Really Fast, Like 23.5 Mph Fast. In The Bowl Game Against Ohio State, Ringo Lines Up To Press Marving Harrison Only to Offer Harrison Jr. the Free Release So Ringo Can Blitz. Cj Stroud Picking Up On The Rouse Passing The Ball To Harrison Jr., who Makes A Move Up Field Only To Get Chased Down By Ringo.

After Capturing A Bludgeoning Pick Six Against Bryce Young And Alabama On The SEC Championship Scouts' Supposed, Given Ringo's Age, His Pedigree Has A former Top Ten Recruit, Another Season Under The Gaze Of The Best Defense In College In Athens, Ringo's Attributes And Physical Profile Would Round Into Form.

He Didn't Get A Pass From College Offenses Because of His Draft Stock Demand. With Georgia's Pass Rush As Fierce As Ever College Quarterbacks Had To Throw Somewhere. Ringo's Completion Percentage Jump Some 13.4% From 40% To 53.4% For 553 Not A Terrible Slip Nevertheless, Ringo's Profile Didn't Rise To Expectations. Against Ohio State, He Got Touched Up Nicely. With a 4.3 Speed Ringo, The turbines Stay In The Winds With any Receiver Going Deep. Tennessee And Their Go Go Brrr Offense Learned That The Hard Away. Ringo Like To Stay Stationary In Press(Sometimes The Patience Just Brackets His Movement Skills). Almost Uncanny How He Digest The Stimulus Reigning In From The Wide Receiver He's Covering. Offenses Had No Place Challenging Him With Any Down Field. Ringo Showed A Tendency, A Real Tendency, To Get "Grabby" At The Top Of Routes Just As Receivers Begin To Enter. His Speed Doesn't Translate To Athleticism. Ringo's Movements Lack A Certain Suddenness Or Explosion, Which Explains His Lack Luster Vertical Jump and Broad Jump. I Don't Think I've Seen A Prospect With An Absurd 4.3 But Dead Spots With The Rest Of The Athletic Testing. He Can Get Out Of His Stance But Almost Tip Toe Like Patience. Simply Watch Ringo Juxtapose With Another Cornerback With Better Fluidity, Like Cam Smith. A Lack of Explosive Also Explains Ringo's Reputation For Playing In Trail Position. His Press Technique Doesn't Disrupt Timing, So Inside Moves And Cuts Easily Defeat Ringo Off The Line.

The Rise Of So Many Corners and Depth At The Position Has Proven The Most Devastating Market Correction For Kelee Ringo's Stock. On The Plus Side, Ringo Has Natural Cornerback "Feel" And Instincts For The Position. His Speed And Frame Make Him A Fiendish Opponent To Face On Deep Routes. His Lateral Quickness, Wait, What Am I Talking About, He Doesn't Have Any Lateral Quickness, And Stickiness Won't Threaten Anyone.

Cam Smith—South Carolina.

When You're Looking through a list Of Your Not Truly Elite NFL Corners But The Better Than Average Cornerbacks, The Jamel Deans, Carlton Davis, Marlon Humphrey, and Adoree Jackson, They Are Complete Corners, And That's Where You'll Find Cam Smith. The South Carolina Product With Elite Movement Skills Really Delivered In His Time With The Gamecock. He Tallied 91 tackles, 3.5 TFL, six picks, and 18 pass deflections Whiles Taking On Top Targets In The SEC. Cam Played Major Snap On The Outside and In The Slot, Press And Off, And Looks More Like A Zone Coverage Guy. The True Difference Between 4.3 And 4.4 Speed Comes To Light In Cam. He Ran A 4.43 At The Combine, And On Film, He Gets Beat Off the Top A lot. Defenses Coaches Will Surely Have To Scheme Smith Into One Or Two Bracket Coverages With a Safety Over The Top While Allowing Cam To Use His Nose To Follow Shallower Routes.

After Crossing One On One On The Outside Off The Board Reconsider Press Coverage. Can Redirect When He's Fully Engaged. He's Got Plus Length, And Whiles He's A Read Reacts Type Pass Catchers Once He Releases, Or They Separate After A Move, Cam Gets Caught Eating Dust Over Top. He Always Looked A Step Or Two Behind. At 180, He's Nowhere Near Strong Enough To Hold College Receivers In Press. College Quarterbacks Never Had The Arm Arsenal To Exploit Him Deep Consistently. According To PFF, "twenty-two of his 94 career targets were either picked off or broken up", But that Twenty-Two Can Easily Meet At The Divide Of Passes, He Broke. The Poor Balls Thrown Around In The SEC. He's Got Skills, But THe Stats Dont Tell The Full Story. He Plays Dipped. According To PFFs Grading Standards, Smith's Grade Fell From 88.4 To A 65.1. Smith Only Has One "Good" Solid Pro Convincing Tape Year Of Solid Production. He Graded Well In Zone Throughout His Career, And That Makes Sense. His Explosiveness And Movement Skill Work Best In Condense Areas and Zones. Teams Like The Patriots Or Patrick Influenced Team Could Look At Moving Smith To Safety If He Struggles To Cover But Shows Excellent Movement Skills. This Safety Class Lack Volume.

Emmanuel Forbes, Texas A&M—Inside My Top Five Theirs Texas A&M Corner Emmanuel Forbes. He's Rail Thin But Tall, Almost Grim Reaper Skinny, But He's Especially Long And Fast And Has Instinct For Tracking The Ball. He's Not Afraid To Come In The Run Fit Despite Weighing In Under 170, But He's To Get Dragged Around In The NFL By Bigger Backs. He's Great In Zone With Read The Depth Of Routes And Springing Into Action With The Ball In The Air. He Has a Hood Height And 6 Foot-Ish, Not a Great Weight At 166 But Ultimately Great Size With a 6'7 Wing Span. If He Can Get His Weight Up To 180-Ish, He'll Become The Elite Prospect Of This Class.

Lamar Jackson Lines Up In The Gun. The Ravens Are Driving, And He Kicks Steps To Get Snap To Get the Ball Moving. From His Look At The Coverage, He's Wise To Get The Ball Out Quick. A No Pressure Matter For Him, The Jets Get A Fair Share Of Pressure Through. Still, No Worries; Mark Andrews Has Lane Open Down Near The End Zone. As He Lofts the Ball Out In the Wind As He Did So Many Times Last Year, Lamar Learns One Of The First Lessons Gets His First Taste Of Sauce. The Rookie Corner Doesn't Pick; He Just Breaks The Pass, Breaks Up The Momentum, and Breaks Up The Fun.

Sauce Doesn't Earn His First Pick Until His Fifth Game. While Wide Make Money For Having Great Hands, Sauce's Ability To Use His Mittens On That Are Secured, Nearly Secured, Proved Devastating On So Many Of The Offensive Plays The Jets Faced. Even As The Jets Got Pummeled On Occasion, Gardner Stood Out High Above The Sky Scraper In Manhattan.

"He's a 2.0 of myself," Said Former Jet Stand Out And Hall Of Famer Darrelle Revis. Sauce Doesn't Move With The Fluidity Of Revis. The Jets Fourth Overall Pick Sweeps Up His legs And Spins, Pushing His Hand With Prestigious Timing, Length, And Focus Break-Up-Rather-Blanketing Approach To The Position (He Lead The League In Pass Break Ups) Will Set The Course For So Many Corners Entering. Suppose Any Receiver, Even The Most Average Receiver, Doesn't Have Skill, The Talent? Enough Bag To Avoid Getting Blanketed. In that case, They'd Find Themselves Out of A Job.

Sauce Alone Didn't Score This Big Status Win For Young Corner Or How A Change In Visualizing How The Position Gets Judged. Check The Tape On Sauce. His Coverage Doesn't Look Clean; He's Just Apt At Cleaning Away The Ball.

The Systemic Programming of the Body To Move In Ways That defeat The Way Nature Program Humans Over Of Years "Adjustments. Cornerbacks, Similarly To Offensive Line, Require A Understanding Of Technique To Scout. The Level Of Freaky Athleticism A Cornerback posses Can, At Times, Assuage any Difficulties A Prospect Has With Tech Physical Traits, And Profile Can't Substitute For Understanding The Moves At The Position. Nothing About Playing Comes Naturally From How I Envision Coverage Specialist Looks Naturally Feels Natural. Another Human Forcing Their Body Back Rolling Against The Forces Of Gravity. Matching Up One On One With A Receiver, On Island Corners Are Lock In A Dance In which They're Reacting To Some Much Stimulus. The receiver Align, The Quarterbacks Eye Any Combination Of players Playing Behind or beside them While Simultaneously Studying The Field For Ways To Dictate The Moves On A Precarious Plateau Of Hip Movement. Playing Corner Even Functionally Takes Years Of Practice, Natural Ability, And An Intrinsic Sense Of Geometry To Master The Position For Anybody. Corners Who Have Mastery oF Position Ate Still Open To Back BREAKING. The 2022 Draft Class Of Defensive Backs Reestablished The Positional And Multiplied The Value Of The Rookie Deals For Corners. Having Sauce Gardner, Trent McDuffie, Tariq Wholen, and Cordale Flott All Open Up And Unlock Their Team's Defenses To Perform At A Higher Level. Later Round Guys Like Jack Jones, Marcus Jones, and Martin Emerson( Wholen Included As A Late Round Stand Out) All Made Surprising Sharp, Immediate Contributions To Their Team. Rookie Cornerback Contract Rank Amongst The Next Valuable Behind Corner And Wide Receiver. Think If The Lions Defense, With Their Strong Pass Rush, Had Just One Of Those Corners. Their Offense Couldn't Carry Their ailing Defense Into the Playoff Despite The Winning Record. Seattle, On The Hand, With a Much Worse Pass Rush, Made The Playoffs With A Leas Than But Turnover Forcing Defense. The Ranking For Corners In This Year's Draft Keeps Jumping From The Start Of The College Season To This Point In THE Draft. I Remember Kelee Ringo Holding The Top Spot For A While, Whose Number One Now. While Last Years Cornerback Class Showcase Something Of A Drop Off From The Top Guys To The Field, This Class Has Far More Thick Viscosity At The Top, Where A lot Of Guys Can Jump Off The Board In The Same Range. I Can't Decipher Whether The League Has Moved Toward The Longer Corners or Longer. Bigger Corners Improved So Much In Their Coverage Skills l, Movement, And Scheme Flexibility That They're Forcing The League To Embrace the Change In Dimension. Most Of The Guys Are "unparalleled" Athletes. I Lean In Towards The Latter, But Either Way, They're Coming In Hoards In This Draft.

I Won't Bury My Head In Metrics Of These Corners. Paddling Through Forty Times And Broad On Corner Doesn't Have The Effect From Maybe A Few Year Because Everyone Expect Speed. The Numbers are Impressive But Almost Formulaic. Corners Have Desperate Need For Speed. You Expect The Rain Outside To Have Wetness. I Make Mention But Who Ran 4.3 Or 4.4 Feel Negligible Here. Explosiveness, Measured And Rated Through Broad Jumps The Same.
