What makes a good QB?

Like So Many Football Enthusiasts Around The World, I Put The Shadowed Remains Of My Life off The Digital Grid To Rest To Take In The Warmly Lit  Spectacle Of Malik Willis’s Pro Day. The Former Liberty Flames Aerial Specialist, Soon To Be First Pick. Took over Football Air Space For Just About Half An Hour To Flex His Air Force Like Control Over The Flying Zone Between The Hash MArks. He Made A casual Day In Shorts,  Tossing Football With The Boys, with The Added Element Of The Media, And Numerous Team Officials  Look Professionally Casual. His Liberty Pro Day Brought Rarified Relevance InTo An Otherwise Uneventful Tuesday Spring Afternoon In Virginia.

Malik Look The Part Of A Polished Prospect.

T-Shirt,  Bulk Up, Oblivious To The Swooning GMs And Coaching Salivating For The Chance Dissect The Quarterback Pinata Further Than The Pre Draft Event Ladder Allowed. The Georgia Boy, Listed at 225. If Commissioned Break Down The Prospect I Would Have To Wonder How Diametrically Distributed The Weight Across His The Top A Lower Body. But otherwise, You Couldn’t Question Anything Else Of What Everyone Came To See. If Not For His Stature (6’1), Malik Could Be A Street Fighter fit.

On The Program Schedule.  Malik Willis Delivered. Hitting His Targets Like a Top Flight Sales Representative For Goldman And Sachs.

The Ball Sprang Out Of His Arm Like His Shoulder Lit a Fuse, and The Ball Caught Fire On Release.  he Made The “Layered” Throws.

Passing Concepts That Require Quarterbacks To Go Over the Top And Or Through  Defenders. Scouts Funnel Through Malik’s Tape Had Those Presumed  Questions To Make Remarks Malik Assuage Their Tensions and Trepidations, At Least on The surface Level.

Along The Way, He’d Break A Sweat Then Dust It Off With a Forty yarder Effortless. Getting Animated With His Colleagues Showing Some Of That Personality Daniel Jeremiah And The NFL Network/Path To The Draft Crew Celebrated After One Of His Ersatz Receiver Converted An Acrobatic Reception. The Broadcaster Beam  In Unison of Tales Malik’s  High Character.

But Here at His Pro Day, the only Glorified aspect is the “Work Outs.”

Willis, Who Transferred from the Auburn Tigers Program After He Failed to Beat out Bo Nix, Left A Stark Image of His Talents. Rolling To His Left On A Boot, Malik Dazzled The Spectator With a 60 Yard Plus Massive On The Move Bomb. The Awes and Jubilation The Dome Struggles To Constrained.

The Pro Day Didn’t Officially End On That Note, But It Might As Well. Willis Made a Few More “Meh” throws =s Inside The 20, But It meant Less. His “Specials” Status Couldn’t Be More Certified.

The Sweat Settled.  Both Malik’s And The Faces Of The Scouts Facing The Decision  On Malik Flattened. The Conversation Remained In Tow.

And That’s All The Quarterbacks In This Class Could Demand.

Malik, Kenny Pickett,  Matt Corral. Quarterbacks Of Vary Skills and Approach To The Position. 2022 All in a The Conversation Of Guys Consider Interchangeably As Prospects. It's No doubt That One If Not All Of These Guys Are Going To Be Taken Early Because The Demand At The position Never Wavers. “If You’re Going To Be Successful In Today’s Football, You Need A Quarterback.” Even Capable Starters Have winning Potential In The Correct Suite. The 2022 Class Of Quarterbacks Are A Catch 22. Their Strengths Are Not The Answers to your scheme. None Of Their inherent Weaknesses Can be Ignored Or Cover-Up In Your Play Calling. But No One Wants To Be The Guy Who Past Up On The Who Might Very Not Likely Win The Super Bowl. With These Guys, You Pick Your Poison and Hope For The Best. Players Who Can Cost You The Season And Save All In One Hit.

The Remarkable  And Intriguing Aspect To Willis’ Workout, It’s Semblance To Justin Fields’, Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, And Zach Wilson’s Pro Day  Of A Year Ago. Those QBs All Inhabited The Same Conversation As Well The First Round Conversation. Each Delivering Nothing Less Than A-List Performances In Shorts.

So What Separates This Group From Last Years Bunch. Inconsistent Film On The Part Of Willis. Zach Wilson Suffered From a Similar Condition, and Trey Lance Had Limited Film From The Start Of The Season. Questionable Physical Traits On The Part Of Pickett. Zach Wilson Never Surpassed Any Of His Originally Injurious Stature. He Doesn’t Play 6’3, And More Over, Matt Carroll played A Similar Style Of Ball only In a Different Shade Of Blue  At Ole Miss.

The Only Obvious Difference, Aside From The Champion Standout At Number One, Trevor Lawrence Would Be The Dialogue. How Panelists and Experts Chew Up These QBs And Their Unique But Very General, Limitations Tends To Be The Differences.

Zach Wilson, Who Struggle In His First Season as A In The NFL Starter, Earned The Esteem Of Scout For Being Tough, Accurate, And Poised. One Season Push Him to number 2 Overall Coming Out Of Nowhere. But There Was Some “Causal” Stuff That Looked Concerning. Little Nuances In  Placement On Account Of His Unorthodox Throwing Motion And Proved Crucial At The Next Level Where Wilson Failed To “Throw Guys Open.” Wilson Could Still Anticipate The Open Ahead Of The Route But So Could The NFL Ready Corners. But Out Of BYU, Zach Looked The Part. A Guy In “one Percent Of The One Percent.”

Both Carrol And Willis pushed out more impressive Performances at their Pro Days Than Zach Wilson. At Least Aesthetically. With quarterbacks, The Eye Could mean Matter More Than Anything, Stats, and Dialogue When It Comes To Evaluating How and Why any Of These Guys Translate To The Next Level.

You Could Akin a quarterback transitioning from college to the NFL To The Rigors Related To Wildlife Coming The World Of The Hunter-Hunted World Of The Jungle. Its Survival. There is a myriad of things The Quarterback Must adapt Getting To Up Speed With the Reality Of pro Level Speed on the Felid often Present The Challenge, The Engaging Encumbering Station Between The Hashes Of integration. Learning The Languages That Are Married To The Differing Concepts In The Scheme Under Their Command.  Not To Mention Being In Command.  All Links On The Chain For Rookie Habitation.

Many Of These Guys Share Trainers,  Regiments, And College System They Developed Within What Intrinsic Traits Separate The  Joe Burrows From The Blaine Gabbert. There Exist In A Book Somewhere, Of Several Well Explorers Tenets That Govern Quarterback Success. The Book Itself  Resist The Power Ironclad Press Because The Football World Throws in A Wrench Or Two Into The System Every So Often.

“Accuracy, anticipation, footwork, pocket presence, athleticism, decision making, mental toughness.”

Above All Else, accuracy Stands Head And Shoulders over The Others. The First and Indispensable Trait. That’s Because Accuracy Defies And Expands Beyond The Head And Shoulders Approach  To Football. Accuracy May Be The Only Attribute That’s Weighted Only In Pure Talent.

The Small Minutiae That Explains Why Aaron Rodgers Won MVP And A Greater Physical Talent Like Cam Newton Can’t Break Back Into The League As A Starter In Any Capacity. The Only Intangible That Matters When Pads Are On And The Lights Are Shining  Bright.

Prospects Can Take To  Position Drills, Conditioning, and Film Study, To Improve Nearly Any Other facet Of The Craft.  But Conditional Accuracy Like IQ Has Fixed Properties. You  Either Have It Or You Don’t. We Start The Dominant Trait Discussion About  And Onwards With This Group Of Arms Who Prepare To Enter The NFL Threshold. How Will Prospects A  Adjust To The New Demands On His  Accuracy? What Wrinkles of  His Long forward Throwing Motion Will Have To Ironed Out? How Will The Adjustment Augment or Depreciate His Game? For Some Others: How Accurate Will Prospect B Throw On The Move? Prospect C Simply Doesn’t Have It.

If A Quarterback Can Tether Brilliant Footwork With Touch or Spot Accuracy, He Becomes A Regular NFL Starter That Falls Into A Teams Hands.

I Have Been Trying To Gather a “Group Think” Evaluation On The quarterbacks Available In 2022, and It's Been No Fun. Like Trying to Solve A Puzzle With The Pieces Missing But The Fixating Unyielding.

Pickett Carroll Ridder is all Over The Board, and Who Falls In Love Over The Next Few Weeks Will Matter The Most In three Weeks

“Could The Lions Draft Malik at Two?” Poor Judgement But Great Speculative Awareness.

I'll Breakdown What I Have Seen And Understand about Three of The Highest Graded Prospects. Last Year Five Guys have Drafted in First Round; This Year; Six Guys Have Their Names Hovering Near The Bottom Or The Top Of The Boards.

Mending Together a Groupthink On These QBs Became an Exercise In It Of Itself. No One Of The Plaudits

around really Likes The Group Ostensible But Some Have their Preferences towards Some Prospects. Of them, I tended to lean more toward Chris Simms, who Ranked Matt Coral As The Best Quarterback Of This Group. Simms, A Former Quarterback Himself, son Of A Quarterback, and Hall Of Famer Now Lead Football Quarterback Head For Pro-football Talk. On His Podcast/Radio Show, He Couldn’t Find A Plugs For Flood when He Gushed Over The ole Miss Quarterback. “ I Observed Him A lot,” Simms said. Take That As You Wish, But I watched A lot Of Carrol Play “Live” Myself. More Than Any Of The Other Guys I Have Written Evaluations. The Higher Viewership Came With The SEC Acclaim Attached To Ole Mis's Name. A Shock In A Bottle. That’s Carrol. The California Kid Passes The Film Test. He Measures In At 6’1 212 Pounds. Carrol Played And Started The Past Two Years at Ole Miss Under Lane Kiffin But Finished His Career With A Bum Ankle. Nevertheless, The Year He Started We’re Steady And Showcased What Carroll Could Bring To The NFL. Aside From Desmond Ridder Of Cincinnati, Carroll Has the Complete Tape. Steady Consistent Delivery On Throws. Excellent Poise And Balance In The Pocket. He Drives His Cleats Through the Ground On All His Throws Furnish Each Delivery with Adequate Power. Carroll has a Natural Base On Drop back. His Legs Never Overlap, and they disengage and reset seamlessly Most Times Than Not. A credit to his athletic Ability. Excellent Straight Line Runner On Draw Plays. A Nice One Cut and Up Field Not Especially Powerful Or Elusive But Stretch Drives And Finish In The Red Zone.  He Had Three Such Red Zone Rushes Against Arkansas. The Biggest Knock On Corral Would Be The RPO Dominant System He Played In Under Lane Kiffin. By Some Estimates, The team Ran RPO 60% Of Carrol’s Drop Back. Nevertheless, On Tape, He Proves On Non- RPO Sets That He Can Make all Of The Throws. Maybe Not the Off Platform “Magician”  Like Say Malik Willis, But Carrol Can Certainly Drive The Deep Ball and Touch On The Intermediate Throws. Quarterbacks Gifted With The Strength To Push Every Throw That’s One Thing. Having the Operation Finesse Or Touch To Guide Receiver Into Spots, That Another. His Touch On Balls Over The Middle Could Be The Best Factor Of His Throwing Catalogue. Whiles Outside The Numbers Or Hash Les On Out Breaking Routes May Require Some Time And Added Bulk and Strength To His Frame. I’m Not Overly Concerned About His Stature. Guys Like Tua, Baker Mayfield, and Drew Brees Play Starter and Hall Of Fame Level Football At Less Than Justin Herbert Status. I’m not so much worried about his RPO History As Well. In College, Lane Kiffin’s Offense Didn’t Demand Carrol To Win Games For The Rebels Saturday in, Saturday Out. It’s Not A knock On Carrol, Who Demonstrated in Limited Reps The Ability To Run Across His reads From Differing Ranges. His Sub Double Figures Depth Of Target(8.5 Yards)Transudes Limitations That His 799 Deep Yards Substantiated. What Kiffin Commissioned Carrol To Handle, The Quarterback Did So Exceptionally. Three Thousand forty-Nine 3,349 Yards, 67.9 Completion Percentage Twenty(20) And Five(5) Interception and Quite Impressive 77.2% Completion On Catchable Balls. Especially Considering The Project Ole Miss Rolled Out At O-Line.  Blowing assignments And Surrender Twenty-Five Sacks on The Season.  In All Teams Won’t Find A Better Option At QB Than Carroll This Year.

Pro Comp: I want to Say, A Lesser Drew Brees.

If I’m A General Manager Of An NFL Team in Search Of A Quarterback, I Scratch Kenny Picketts Name Off The Board, and I Look Forward To 2023. The Small Hands Are A Deal Breaker For Me. His Pro Day Measurements moved The Marks Up 1/8 Of an Inch, But The Camera Doesn’t Add The Depth To The An half Original Reported. I Know It’s Different Up Close, Sure, But How Much Of A Difference.

Anytime The Camera motion In, You Get a Close Up view. It's Noticeable—the Differences Between Pickett And Another Prospect Pickett Comfortable Holding the Ball. The Greater Force Pickett Has To Apply To His Grip To Hold The Ball And How That Affects The Trajectory and Flow Of The Throws. The Concentration Compounds Both Aspects And  Negates Each Other. It’s a Double Negative. The Strength Needed To Hold The Ball Dampens The Strength Need To Torpedo It Downfield.  The Inertia Fighting The Velocity. “Conservation of linear momentum dictates that when a mass strikes an equal mass at rest and sticks to it, the combination must move at half the velocity because the product of mass and velocity must remain constant.”. Not Perfect Physics, But It’s  The Closest Distribution For What Takes Place When Pickett Throws. Pickett May Have To Apply More Force Considering The Ball And Hand Mass Difference. The Wrinkles aren’t Pronounced “Presently” Because He’s Advanced in His Methodically. Well, Train With What Experienced Scout Call “ Balance, Efficient Throwing Mechanics.” The Cleanest Well Constructed Throwing Mechanic In This Draft And To The  Least Above Average.  The Frames Of Pickett Exacting Ball Placement on short outs Make The Ball Look Uncomfortable Leaving  His Hands. Like A Child Holding Another child or a Watermelon. At His Pro Day No Less. The Entire Pattern, Scripted And  Overlayed With Complimentary Structure That  Push Prospects Strengths  The Forefront. The Lack Of Game Speed Reps And The Absence Of A Pass Rush Of Even A Pocket With The Purpose Of Disguising Physical Limitation.

On the Plus Side Of things, Pickett Steps Into The Draft ready To Deliver Pro-Ready Value To A-Team. Pickett Walked The Road As A Four Year Starter on Staggered Improvements.  His Grade Dropped Between 2019 & 2020 But He Picked Up And Put It All Together In 2021. Four Thousand Three Hundred Yards.  Eight Yards Forty-Two And Seven Interception As Redshirt Senior. He had 38 career fumbles and lost 26.

Four Years Starting For Panthers Of Pitt. Pickett’s Experience Stand above Most Of His Competition, Most Of Whom Spent An Inordinate Amount Of Time Running College Offenses. Experience Nearly Encapsulates All Of The Traits That Make Him A Brilliant Quarterback. A Level Headed Guy Who Can Make All Of The Standard Throws A-Team Requires. Pickett Demonstrated Excellent Feel and Foot Work In The Pocket. Naturally Moving Forward Or Dialogue, Like a Rook On A Chessboard, As He “Feels” The Rush And Keeps His Head Downfield. This Above All  Shines Above The Rest Of The Group When Picketts Experience Enters The Conversation. Poise. His Vision And Playmaking on The Move aren’t where You’d Like It To Be. Pickett’s Suffers From Inconsistent Footwork. He’s What Quarterback Specialist J.T. O’Sullivan Calls Heel Click-Y. His Heels Wire In Into Each Other When He Moves In The Pocket.

Pickett  Can Improve His Footwork. But Otherwise, You’d Like To See More Polish Considering His Experience. Furthermore, When Pickett’s Pockets Are Clean, and Given Adequate Time To Survey Downfield, He’s The Exceptional Marksman Teams Are Looking For At The Position. The Tape against Miami Put All Of The Ranges Of Pickett’s Skill In The Bucket.  He Marks His Spots and Finished His Composition Of 519 Yards and Four Touchdowns With The Ornate Blending Of A Painter.

The Hand size Nor Arm Strength Can Be Boosted Improve Drastically Or At All. Remarkably Pickett Inches Out A Few Other Prospects In Age. The Pitt Super Senior Will Be 24 By The Time The Season Starts. The Upside Of Picking Pickett Early Takes a Few Shots Especially Compared To Others Like Willis Or Even Carson Strong.  Guys Who Aren’t Pliably Young By Any Means But Aren’t  “Seasoned” By Any Means Either. Pickett’s Success Will Come Down To His Teams Align. In College, He Average Over   Three Seconds Per Throw, 3.2 To Be Exact. Beautiful Protection But Will That Translate To The League. He has at Best 2.2 Or Less. On The Move, Pickett Tends To Laser In On His Initial Target. His Processing Breaks Down as If He’s Running On Insufficient Ram. A Spotty Practice To Engender  College Because The Game Moves Faster Up Above. His Deliveries Didn’t Hurt Him So Much In The ACC But Could Be crushing In The Pros.

The Hand Size. There is nothing about Pickett’s Game Keeps Pulling me Back. are They Too Small. On Record, they Would Be Smallest Ever For an NFL Starter. I Can’t Overstate The Fact of Any Prospect Expected to Go Before Day One Or Two.  If Any One Thing Levels Pickett’s Progress In The NFL, It Would Be.

Pickett Has Force Fracture Evaluation On Most Of His Translatable Skills, But Most Consider Him The Most Accurate QB Of The Bunch. Accuracy As We Discuss Could Be The Quality That Maligns Quarterbacks. Accuracy,  A Rare Quality That Can Only Be Found, Not Treated or Developed. Nevertheless, We’ve Seen “Accurate” Quarterbacks Come Into The League and Fail To Lift Teams. Say, Jared Goff.  The Ceiling For Pickett, Joe Flacco With Less Arm Talent.

Malik Willis Has The Strongest Arm In This Draft. It’s a Fact That Might Be The Only agreeable Terms amongst Qualities On Any Of These prospects. If You’re Looking For A Law Of Motion Defying Prospect, Then The Dodge Charger Strength Strap To The Arm Of Willis Would Be That Guy. Malik Strengths  Compliment And Nearly Rival His Arm It’s His Power On The ground. He Broke 89/90 Tackles As A Quarterback. Lead The Nation. Malik Forgo Running a Forty A Both the Combine and  His Pro Day but On Tape You Witness The Rear Tyreek Hill-Esque Cuts and Explosion. When Both Traits Mend  Together On One Play, It’s a Made For “Status” Moment. With the Highest Big Time Throw Rate(10.7%, According To PFF) In The Nation Made For A Gaudy But Inconsistent Season. At Best Quarterback Master, The Game PLAYED On Sunday’s “ From The Pocket.” Willis Excel In The Extended Ranges. If anything, He’s

Even Better When The Structure Degrade, And He Has To See Beyond His Reads.  He’s Not Afraid To Load The Canon and Launch The Ball 30 Plus Yards After Escaping The Pocket. It’s That Special Trait To Reset The Foot Work To Unlock Your Hips With Accuracy And Power. And It Shows In the Stats. One Thousand Thirty-Three (1033)Yards Deep. Graded In 97th percentile on Deep Throws. The Kind Of Guy That Make The Spectacular Look Routine. But His Routine Reads Are His Deficiencies. You Have To Wonder How much Of His Rushing Ability Will Translate To The Next Level. He’s Not Especially Elusive Or Quick.  More Stucky And Combustible. He’s Downhill. Once He Plant and Gets Momentum, It Takes a Wall Of Resistance to Break His Stride. But NFL Pass Rusher Are Mean.  Clipping Slippery Quarterbacks In The Backfield, Easy Work With The Only Exception But Joystick Juke Lamar Jackson. Malik Doesn’t Shift Gear Like Lamar. Moreover, Edge Rushers Set Edges On Containments allowing A Convoy Of Secondary Defenders Time To Collapse. I Can’t See Those Rushing Opportunities Break Every Opening Not at The Profusion It Did At Liberty.

With Willis, The Judgement Rest On How Much  Scouts and GMs Become Enamored With The Eye Test. For the Most Of His Season, Malik Demonstrated Superior Athleticism In the Competition. More muscular build, Quicker Strides. “ The Best Athlete On The Field” Regardless Of Position.  That won’t be the case on Sundays. There Are Plays On Tape when Just “Out Athletes” Defenders On Scrambles. Those Are Less Likely To Happen On Sunday When They Lack refinement and Technically savvy To Complete Drives. His Mechanics Break Down at Times. His Base, His Leg, and Hip Alignment Fall Through, Often Due To a Lack Of Discipline In Balance. he’s Been Quoted as “Coachable,” But Coaching Can Only Change So Much. Up Above His Throwing Mechanic Will Need Adjustment. There are A lot Of Moving Parts To His Throw And Targeting. As he Plays Unfold and An Option Opens Up, His Eyes Process Faster than The Ball Can Release Because He Dips, Rises, and Then Snaps. The Ball Springs up Out Of His Hand Because of His Elongated Throwing Mechanic. Stretching The Elbow Out Further And Dipping The Hand Lower Multiples   Deep Throws But Affects Touch Of Shorter Intermediates The area Where Willis Struggled. It’s the split seconds that will make the difference. Because He’ll Visual Gather The Same Windows in The Pros as In College, But They Close Faster, And Any Hitch Could Be the Undoing Of a Throw. I Haven’t Seen Too Many Quarterbacks Like Malik, So A Pro Comp Kordell Stewart, Which Works Well. A More Compact Cam Newton.

There are A Myriad Of Other Draft Options Also Entering The Draft That the Quarterback Needed Team Will Be Looking To Sure Up Or Bolster Their Roster. Carson Strong, Nevada. Sam Howell, North Carolina. Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati.

With Sub Or Less Than Adequate “Difference Making Talent” In This Draft, It’s A No Brainer That Teams Will Reach Early And Pray Late On Some Guys. Quarterback Needy Teams That Represent Almost Half Of The League Can Fight The Dearth In Talent With, Surplus In Options.
